As gardeners start planning for next spring expert Sue Kent reveals a sneaky tip that will make a small garden look a great deal bigger Speaking on the Gardeners World Magazine podcast Sue explained that shes been extending the borders in her garden and maximising one particular colour Ive been on the hunt for interesting white plants I think white plants in general often bring up the colour or soften the colour in a mixed border But if youre having your own white border if youve got a dark hedge or a wall with green and dark colours they can really light up that space They can also make a space seem bigger And I think theyre very calming and and so I absolutely love white plants White flowers also keep definition in your flowerbeds long into the evening One good choice is the Hellebore or Lenten rose While its flowers look delicate they are very resistant to cold weather popping out in late winter to early spring to give you garden an early boost At the other end of the year Anemones will brighten your garden in late summer often persisting well into autumn Mooonflowers and Lilies are a good choice as long as your garden gets plenty of sun but if your city garden is overlooked by other buildings consider more shadetolerant plants such as Epimedium Trillium or Foamflower Among the flowers brightening up Sues borders are Japanese anemones and a big white hydrangea Sue added that while flowers might be the star players in a garden its important not to neglect the plants in the background She said Its about the foliage its about the textures Its really important to get different textures different heights and you know and and all the different greens Im still getting the green colour right I need a few more different greens She adds that every flower in her garden has earned its position Gardening is quite hard work especially as you get older So you want more bang for your buck You dont want to be fiddling and faffing and changing things round So I want my gardens be really flowery because I love flowers but I want those flowers to really work hard for their position
